Chiropractic for Pregnancy Support and Wellness

Posted on May 1, 2012 by Dr. Andrea Hoglen

I've had a dramatic increase in the number of maternity patients who I have seen recently, and they have reminded me of how important it is for an expectant mother to receive chiropractic care during her pregnancy.

Why should a Pregnant Woman go to a Chiropractor?

First, chiropractors are by far the best choice to deal with back pain, naturally. Most women will experience some degree of back pain during their pregnancy, as the body shifts to accommodate the extra weight from the baby.

Second, research has shown that regular chiropractic care throughout the pregnancy can decrease labor times by an average of 24% for first-time moms, and an average of 39% for experienced moms! What pregnant women doesn't want that?

Third, research done by members of the American Medical Association Board of Trustees found that, Women who received chiropractic adjustments in their third trimester were able to carry and deliver their child with much more comfort. This coincides with a hospital-based study that showed women who had visited a chiropractor regularly had a 50% lower use of painkillers during delivery than other women.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for both a Pregnant Woman and the Baby?

Yes! Chiropractic care is natural, safe, and drug-free! Your chiropractor can help alleviate the strain on your back, without the need for a painkiller. Many chiropractors, such as myself, practice nutritional care in addition to chiropractic. This means that you can get the highest quality prenatal nutrition, as well as supplements that will help prevent a cold or flu during your pregnancy. I advise all of my maternity patients to consider immune and wellness supplements, in addition to their prenatal vitamins, in order to keep their body strong and healthy through the course of their pregnancy.

What else can be done to help prevent back pain during pregnancy?

Plenty of simple things will help to keep you pain-free, in between your regular chiropractic visits. Avoid wearing high heels, as these force your pelvis to tilt unnaturally. Avoid lifting things, which includes young children which you may already have! Make sure to use a pillow between your legs when sleeping, as this will keep you comfortable and your spine neutral. And as always, exercise! Your exercises should be gentler as you progress in your pregnancy, however exercise and stretching greatly help to relieve back pain once your joints are in proper function from your adjustment!
